Building Houses, Building Hope

A Home of Our Own Campaign

Providing safe, decent, affordable homes for families in need -- the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Summit County -- is needed now more than ever in our community. Since 1987, Habitat has helped nearly 150 families in Summit County achieve their fream of building and owning "a home of their own."

Our organization is now at a crossroads. Our ability to increase the number of homes we can build each year is limited by the physical space of our facilities. Each of our three operations -- administrative, construction warehouse and ReStore -- have potential to grow and serve more local families, but our Summit County affiliate must secure a "home of our own" in order to reach our fullest potential for the community.

Extensive research has led our staff and board of trustees to find that not only is housing all three arms of the operation under one roof the most financially responsible choice, it also provides us with the opportunity to fill a current vacant facility in need of a tenant, rather than just embark on new construction.

A diverse group of business, government and community leaders comprise a campaign steering committee led by Tom and Sue Strauss. Sue is a long-time volunteer and trustee of Habitat, and both Tom and Sue are well known and highly respected for their servant leadership within Summit County. Tom and Ginny Knoll are serving as Honorary Co-Chairs for the campaign. Both Tom and Ginny are deeply committed to the Greater Akron community. Their unstinting and selfless leadership, volunteerism and philanthropy have mad an immeasurable difference in the lives of countless children and families.

Our Campaign Goal: To raise $2.2 million from foundations, corporations, churches, individuals, special events and federal, state, county and city grants. This money will be used to pay for the purchase and renovation costs of our new facility, as well as expenses involved with relocating. Raising the full amount is anticipated to take two years.
