Thrivent Builds - Thrivent for Lutherans Content
In 2005, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International (HFHI) joined together to create the “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” alliance, a four-year, $125 million alliance designed to help address the complex issue of poverty housing. The relationship is helping Habitat for Humanity to increase its annual house production by hundreds of homes per year in the United States and around the world. As a not-for-profit organization, part of the mission of Thrivent Financial is to help individuals and families achieve financial security. A home is often a family’s biggest asset, making it an important part of achieving economic independence. Habitat for Humanity seeks to create affordable housing in partnership with those who otherwise could not purchase a home of their own. In building simple, decent, affordable homes with families in need, the Thrivent Builds with Habitat alliance reflects the missions and values of both organizations. Several programs fall under the umbrella of the allianceThrivent Builds Homes The Thrivent Builds Homes program is designed to support financially the construction of hundreds of Habitat homes annually in the United States and also engage thousands of local Thrivent Financial members and hundreds of Lutheran congregations as volunteers to help build the homes. Thrivent Financial provides 65 percent of the construction costs for each home, with remaining funding generated by local Thrivent chapters, Habitat affiliates and other supporters.Thrivent Builds Worldwide The Thrivent Builds Worldwide program offers two options for short-term (one- to three-week) voluntourism trips for teams of 12 to 15 people: Thrivent Builds Worldwide Destination of Choice and Thrivent Builds Worldwide Communities. Both types of trips are organized by individuals, congregations, Lutheran organizations, Thrivent chapters and other groups. Teams comprised of at least 50 percent Thrivent Financial members help build houses in locations around the world.Destination of Choice trips allow participants to build a home where their hearts and passions lead them. Trip destinations include sites in locations offered by the HFHI Global Village program. For each team, Thrivent Financial makes a $10,000 donation to the Habitat for Humanity host affiliate to support homebuilding projects in that area. The Thrivent Builds Worldwide Communities trips offer participants the opportunity to impact entire communities and build lifelong relationships with other Thrivent Financial members through recurring, targeted trips to a specific location. Trip participants ultimately build an entire community, not just one home. Both types of Thrivent Builds Worldwide trips offer participants a unique opportunity to become active partners with people of other cultures. Team members work alongside residents of a Habitat for Humanity host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable homes worldwide. Thrivent Builds NeighborhoodsThe Thrivent Builds Neighborhoods program emphasizes more than building homes—it is helping to rebuild entire communities in its two successful pilot locations. The program supports holistic improvement within these two neighborhoods to greatly enhance the quality of life for residents. In addition to housing, a Thrivent Builds neighborhood would expect to see improvements in areas such as safety, recreation, education, health care and financial literacy.
