Please Read The Information Below Entirely If You Would Like to Volunteer With Habitat, Either As An Individual Or A GroupHabitat for Humanity of Summit County, Inc. is happy to accept volunteers as long as there is work to do and as weather permits. There is no specific commitment necessary to become a Habitat volunteer, you may come out as often as you like. 1. In recognition of federal labor laws regarding children and the potential risk to children’s safety on a construction site, NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 16 is allowed on a construction site while construction is going on. Further, no one under the age of 18 should be allowed to do any ultra-hazardous activities, which include the use of power tools or motor vehicles, demolition, roofing, working from a height of six feet or more, or excavation operations.Youth ages 16 and 17 are permitted to do such activities as clearing lots of rock and debris, landscaping or painting. These activities are very limited to only certain times throughout our build season and can only be done on days when active construction is not being done. For this reason, our affiliate abides by a rule that we prefer all volunteers on our sites to be 18 or over. Youth 14 and 15 are able to volunteer at the ReStore.2. For safety purposes, the ratio on site is 10 volunteers to 1 supervisor. If you want to schedule a group of people to volunteer, that’s great but please know THERE MUST BE NO MORE THAN 7 in your group so that our partner families can work on their house with you. If you want to come out as a group, you must schedule that in advance with our office. 3. All volunteers must view the safety video which is linked to this site below and download a waiver form of liability and complete it. Please bring the waiver form with you to the jobsite. 4. We ask that all volunteers bring their own lunches to the site as we do not provide lunch. We do have water on site and port-a-toilets, but you are encouraged to bring an extra bottle of water, sunscreen, hammer and a hat.Long pants are preferred, but shorts in the summer are fine as long as they are not baggy and loose to avoid catching on construction equipment. We prefer you wear items of clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty as this is construction work. Tennis shoes are fine, but absolutely no open-toe shoes, slide on shoes, or loose fitting shoes are permitted.Ladies, we ask that you not wear tank tops; t-shirts are the most preferred as shirts with buttons can also become caught in construction activity. Habitat will provide all the tools necessary to do the day’s activity. We also provide hard hats, goggles and gloves. 5. When you have scheduled a day to volunteer with us, we will NOT be able to give you a site address to report to generally until the day before. This is because we set our build schedule at the beginning of each week and the amount of volunteers and weather have a great deal to do with what gets done on each home throughout the week. Also understand that we cannot tell you what activity to expect to do in advance, such as framing, insulation, drywall, siding or painting as this is a constantly changing schedule, again based on the number of volunteers each work day and the weather. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding on this issue.ReStore Volunteering - We need people who are available during the week to assist with picking up donated materials.
