Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does Habitat for Humanity of Summit County do?
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County is a non-profit, ecumenical organization that builds and renovates homes in partnership with qualified families. We are dedicated to making simple, decent and affordable housing available in our community for low-income families in need.

How do you keep the costs of building a house so low?
We build homes with donated or discounted materials and volunteers to keep costs low.

Does Habitat for Humanity of Summit County give away houses?
We don't give away homes. Our homes are sold on a 20-30 year, no-interest mortgage, paid directly to Habitat to help fund additional housing for families in need.

Do Habitat homes lower property values?
No, in fact, our homes increase property value.

How many houses has Habitat for Humanity of Summit County built?
We have already built over 165 homes. We have housed more than 180 adults and nearly 325 minors in the past 25 years.

Where are Habitat for Humanity of Summit County's houses located?
We have homes in Akron, Barberton, Copley Township, Stow and Twinsburg.

How do I apply for a safe, affordable home?
Applications can be downloaded from this website or be picked up from our office during business hours: Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30 p.m.

What must I have to qualify for a home?
A need for adequate shelter, the willingness to partner with Habitat, a decent and responsible credit history, and the ability to pay a monthly mortgage payment ranging from $450-$550 a month.

What do I have to do if I get approved for a Habitat home?
Each adult in the household must complete 250 sweat equity hours. Hours are completed by building their own home and the homes of others, volunteering with other non-profits and classroom sessions held by the affiliate. Children in the household can also contribute to the adult's hours by getting good grades.

How long does it take to get a home?
The entire process could take anywhere from 12-24 months.

How do I donate to Habitat for Humanity of Summit County?
We accept monetary donations, donations of buildable land and new or gently used home furnishings and building materials. Donations can be dropped off at the ReStore or picked up by us. You can also donate on this website.
